Hailing from the Boulgou Province of Burkina Faso, where she was born around 1971 in the small border village of Kipoura, Hawa Boussim is an acclaimed Burkinabé singer, songwriter, and recording artist. She is highly celebrated across Francophone West Africa for her inventive ability to inject ancient, regional folk traditions into the high-octane rhythms of contemporary Afropop and Coupé-Décalé.
Lacking access to standard institutional schooling, Boussim's innate musicality blossomed organically within her community, where she spent her adolescence performing vocal accompaniments for traditional weddings, baptisms, and funerals. Writing exclusively in her native Bissa dialect, her life took a commercial turn after she placed first in a 2009 community talent competition.
Backed by a relative in broadcasting, she recorded her debut studio project, "Môbidoré," in 2011. The album’s daring fusion of indigenous African chants with modern Nigerian-style electronic instrumentation instantly caught the attention of television networks and international festivals.
Her definitive breakthrough arrived with the 2017 release of her sophomore album, "Mingoureza." The record's standout single, "Koregore," accompanied by an impactful music video highlighting social issues like food waste, became a massive continental hit. This widespread acclaim drew the attention of Sony Music distribution and led to her receiving Burkina Faso’s highest musical honor, the Kundé d'Or, in April 2018. Touring extensively across West Africa and Europe, Boussim remains an essential ambassador for indigenous linguistic preservation in modern music.
